Unboxing Day: A 5-Minute Checklist Before You Break Down the Box

The best part of a mystery box is the two minutes after the tape comes off. Give it five more minutes of light diligence and you'll never lose a legitimate claim.

1. Photograph the box before opening

One photo of the sealed box, one of the shipping label. If anything inside turns out damaged, a carrier-damage claim is dramatically easier with before photos. Ten seconds, worth it.

2. Open from the top seam, keep the packing slip

Cut the tape, not the box wall — crushed corners tell a story if you need a claim. Keep the packing slip; it's your record of the order and makes support conversations instant.

3. Lay everything out before judging anything

Unpack the whole assortment first. A mystery box is a portfolio, not a single item — judge the spread, not the first thing you grab.

4. Check condition against the tier's standard

Your tier stated a condition standard when you bought (ours print it on the tier card: new overstock and shelf pulls on Starter and Standard; inspected open-box added on Premium). Shelf-worn packaging is within standard. A damaged or non-working item is not — that's claim territory.

5. Report damage inside the window

Every honest seller has a claim window — ours is 7 days for transit damage, with photos. Don't sit on it. A seller who makes this hard is telling you something; a seller who makes it easy has priced honesty into the business.

Then enjoy the haul

Keep what you love, gift what you don't, and if something's genuinely useless to you, someone at a yard sale or donation bin disagrees. The box already did its job: more value than you paid, and a few minutes of genuine surprise.
